Barack Obama has won the most important election of our time. Senator Obama earned 349 electoral votes during Tuesday’s November 4th election. This is only 30 electoral votes short of those earned by Bill Clinton in 1996, which was the most for any Democratic president. His primary wins were in the Western, Northeast & Northern Midwest states. Most of what you may hear on the news now is not “what Sarah Palin’s kids did yesterday” but speculation as to what the future holds for the new President-Elect, who is also the first African-American to be elected president. Senator Obama has generally been seen as a reformer. He has offered a detailed plan to get America’s economy back on track, by creating new jobs, of which 5 million will be labeled as “green”, and easing the burden on hardworking Americans by offering middle-class tax cuts three times the size of McCain’s. He also wishes to put children first by investing in early childhood education, making sure our schools are adequately funded and led by high-quality teachers, and reforming the No Child Left Behind act. President-elect Obama plans to work with his military commanders to responsibly end the war in Iraq and he will re-focus our resources on Al Qaeda in Afghanistan and finish the fight with the terrorists who attacked us on 9/11. For every good outlook on the future presidency, there are just as many negative projections. Thomas Sowell's syndicated column compared Senator Barack Obama to Bolshevik revolutionaries, Adolf Hitler, Mao Zedong, Jim Jones, and "other despotic regimes in China, Cuba, and Iran," all leaders who Sowell claimed resemble Obama in that they rose to power on a message of "change" or due to "inspiring rhetoric and a confident style" more than "specifics." Sowell also falsely claimed that Obama "was against a law forbidding physicians to kill a baby that was born alive despite an attempt to abort it”. In this year’s Senate race, the Democratic Party was able to take control, now having 55 delegates. The Republican Party currently has 40 senators and two seats belong to independents. The House of Representatives is also Democratically controlled, the Democratic Party now has 255 delegates; while the Republican Party has 174. CNN.com |

Unemployment is unpleasant, and it’s especially hard now that our economy is officially in a recession. I know because I recently joined the ranks of the jobless. Unemployment in Sonoma County reached 6.1 percent of the population in July and August, the highest it’s ever been in 13 years. I can tell you; not having a constant flow of income is tough. If you’re looking for a job I suggest applying everywhere you know; even if they are not hiring, most businesses keep job applications on file months after they have been turned in. Unfortunately, now it’s harder than ever to get a job especially when you are a teenager going to high school. With jobs in high demand and employment positions at an all time low, employers want more skilled, older workers who have more flexible schedules. So if you’re a young teen looking to make some money, local handyman work may be the quickest way to remedy your financial needs. Asking neighbors, local store owners and even teachers if they have any odd jobs they need done is a great way to make some cash and gain work experience. Offering to do yard work, clean, help people move, baby sit, or even tutoring someone’s kid are just a few ways you can make some quick cash as well as gain experience working in different environments. Remember; only ask people that you’re familiar with. Then again who needs money? Who is it that said the love of money is the root of all evil? Do I really need money? Heck that’s what parents are for as far as I’m concerned. I mean I’m way happier now that I’m spending my parent’s money and not mine. Yep, looking back on it now, unemployment is the best thing that has happened to me. |

All though our unemployment rates are high and economically we’re in a recession, the depression of the 1930’s was much worse. Food lines and work lines stretched out for miles. |
