Text Box: The Artistic Styling's of Geyserville

Brett Wilson

Geyserville students are often found to be excellent writers, drawers, poets, and actors. More often then not, these works go unappreciated. But not today! I’ve compiled a few works I’ve found especially good, this poetry is sure to please.

Demon

By Tesia Yanez

It’s something I have to face.

Everyday it looks me in the eye and taunts me.

It wants me to play its game.

Its sick little game.

How can something so displeasurable have

             So much power over me?

It’s my demon.

The nightmare that I can’t escape.

It feeds off the feeling of dissolution that I

             keep locked up inside.

That’s when it overpowers me, leaves me with

             an intimidation, and defeated sensation

It’s taken over my mind.

To prove it’s me Keeper, it leaves marks on my body.

No matter how hard I try to avoid it, it will

             always be there.

It will stay by my side to “comfort” me.

It’s time for a revolution.

The time has come to bid adeut to my addiction.

Job Search

Luke Gevas

I have always loved being outdoor with my brothers climbing trees and having adventures. Even when it rained we were outside playing survivor trying to see who could stay the driest, be the quickest thinker and decision maker.   I enjoyed being active outdoors rather than sitting and doing nothing indoors.  If I was forced to stay indoors, I would play a board game or do some other activity that helped develop my mind. Becoming a fireman would allow me to use these problem-solving skills and talents while being outdoors and helping people.

In order to be a volunteer firefighter you need a high school diploma. Paid firefighters must be trained and have an EMT (Emergence Medical Technician) certificate. (5, 2)   Santa Rosa Junior College has a twelve-course program that offers you a Firefighter 1 Academy Diploma and the EMT certification.  You also need to have on the job experience before you can qualify for the certificate in fire technology. (3,1)   For the higher-level jobs such as fire marshal and fire investigator you need a college degree. The junior college provides the first step with an Associates Degree. (4,1)  This AA can be used to transfer to another university to get a Bachelors Degree, thus, allowing you to apply for the higher-level jobs.

Once you obtain your degree and the necessary training you are prepared for the responsibilities of a firefighter. This includes protecting people, animals and property from fires. Firefighters are also responsible for people that are trapped or injured during a fire.  They are also called for duty during major disasters.  The job involves being able to work as a team to prevent accidents and deaths caused by a fire.  Firefighters hold safety trainings and inspections to inform people of ways they can prevent accidents. (5,1)

Competition is high so getting the job is not always easy.  High academic achievement and physical conditioning are essential for securing a job. Job growth is slow but will improve as more fire stations are built and retirement happens. (5,1)    Fire departments are continuously transferring volunteer positions to paid positions as a result more jobs are created.  Once you secure  a job as a firefighter, layoffs are rare. (1,4)

My love fore you is like a boulder

It’s so heavy on my shoulder

That love for you I will always carry

Until maybe we get married

The love I have for you will always exist

No matter if we fight and get pissed

We can make it through thick and thin

But we need to talk about everything

If you love me like I do

Well then my future is with you

Their moment, their day.

What I think

Is that wherever people are going

Everybody will get there eventually.

So why does it matter how fast

We go?

A firefighter’s salary starts at around $13 to $24 an hour.  Firefighters earn money hourly; however, once promoted to a manager or supervisory position you earn an annual salary.  In a management or supervisor position you can earn $46,000 to $57,000 per year.  Overtime is available through working extra shifts or being called out during emergencies.  Benefits include medical and liability insurance along with paid holidays, vacations and sick leave.  Retirement pensions give financial security for elderly firefighters.  (1,5)

The idea of being a firefighter both excites and worries me. Some of the reasons I am not sure that I want to be a firefighter are based on the low pay compared to the amount of schooling and training that is expected.  Another reason is that it is very dangerous and even be life threatening at times.  I think that I would be willing to do the schoolwork because the pay off for me would be the satisfaction of working outdoors and being of service to people.  My favorite reason for choosing this career is the physical activities required by the job.  The idea of not doing the same routine day after day and being involved in protecting and serving people would bring me great satisfaction.
