The senior lounge has been a place of comfort for seniors for many years. However, this year there has been a sharp increase in the number of underclass students who think it is ok if they just “chill” in the lounge in-between classes when there are no seniors around. I decided to ask some seniors what they thought about sharing the lounge with underclass students. Senior Arithzi Rivera said “As long as we invite them to join us it’s ok, but if they just come in that is not ok!” When asked the same question, senior class president Morgan Chiantella had this to say “If underclass students are in the lounge after school I really don’t care. However, if any are found in the senior lounge during school hours (regardless of the presence of seniors) they will be put into a dumpster on a hot day as I personally fill it up with water! As for how long they must reside in said dumpster, it depends on their amount of time in the lounge.” Needless to say, I was comforted by the class president’s strong words and seemingly fair methods of dealing with these students. Since I was still a good 150 words away from my goal for this school newspaper article, I had the idea to see what some of the teachers thought about senior lounge protocol. Mr. Klug, a teacher at Geyserville High for 25 years, said “I feel very strongly about not having underclass students in the lounge. The senior sitting room is intended for seniors and no one else; the senior class has earned the right to their own area similar to how the teachers have their own lounge. When I see an underclass student in the senior lounge and a senior tells me that they invited them in (as a single tear ran down his cheek) . . . . . I find it very disheartening.” Needless to say after my interview with Mr. Klug and my senior classmates I had come to realization about the senior lounge… NO UNDERCLASS STUDENTS IN THE SENIOR LOUNGE EVER! As of the second quarter, the Senior Class has finally begun to plan for their Class Trip. The plan is to spend the weekend of the 29th of May from Thursday through Sunday, when it will be sunny and warm, in Santa Cruz. There is even talk of staying in one of the numerous of beach houses, though this will cost between $400 and $500 a night. This may present a problem, as the weekend will cost around $1,200 and $1,500 with a $1,000 deposit, more than half of the classes’ remaining funds. Finding something to do in Santa Cruz will be an easy task. One of the main activities is going to be spending time at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk “in the warm California sun,” as Senior Joseph Romero put it. Another idea is exploring Santa Cruz’s large Downtown area, complete with a huge number of shops and restaurants. Perhaps best of all will be spending the day in the warm sun at the sandy beach. The greatest obstacle concerning the trip may very well be the fact that this years’ senior class, more so than others, is in no way close to each other as a class. Many seniors may not get along together and many seniors don’t wish to spend an entire weekend trapped in a house in a city they don’t know with those who they dislike. “I think that we can make it through a weekend, but we won’t all be around a bonfire singing. We’ll all be off in separate groups hanging out,” said senior Arithzi Rivera about whether or not the class could handle a weekend together. |
