As the end of the school year approaches, many students feel the stress of finals, graduation, or the continuation of their educational careers. For this reason, I chose to have end-of the-year projects in each of my math classes so students could apply their mathematical knowledge to real-world situations.

Algebra 1 students are working on a Roller Coaster project in which they are designing a ride that would be sold to an amusement park. Their project includes their design, the velocity calculations at a least two loops or hills in their coaster and two financial scenarios that present loan information for their potential buyers.

Geometry students completed a project using clinometers and trigonometry. Student groups used a device that measured the angle of elevation to the top of an object so its height could be determined. Some students measured the height of Mr. Pettis’s building while others measured the height of trees on campus.

Algebra 2 and Pre-Calculus students are investigating the history of Conic Sections and how they occur in art and architecture. Groups of students are also taking pictures of conic sections in the real world and then calculating equations that represent their pictures.

And finally, Calculus students are trying to solve a problem in which a person is riding a Ferris wheel and another person is throwing a ball for them to catch. The students have to determine the angle the ball is thrown so the person on the Ferris wheel can catch it to within 0.1 meters.

The mathematics of the physical world is beautiful and can be appreciated everyday!
