Feelings of nervousness, excitement, and apprehension overcame the 15 Geyserville Middle School students. Although we’d been to a track meet prior in Willits (at Mendocino College), we were still very nervous. Our lack of experience made us anxious to compete against the students from other schools. What we later found out brought confidence: most of the other schools had not practiced either. Finding our events wasn’t difficult. There was a person who yelled out the events taking place at that time. You were supposed to wear a tag so the people who managed the events could identify you. On the tag were your name, school, division, and event you were taking part in. When you arrived at your field event, you gave your tag to the person who directed the event, waited your turn, and did the event. |

In a running event, you got in your lane, ran your heart out, and gave your tag to the timers when you were finished. There are a few rules about the events, but the directors explain them to you beforehand. Most of the students participated in 3-5 events. I took part in 5: shot put, discus, 100m, ½ mile, and the 4x100m relay. It was a great experience to learn the fundamentals of track and field, but also for socializing. The kids from the other schools were friendly. When I spoke to one girl from Ukiah, we talked as if we had known each other our whole lives. It was a very fun experience. When I asked some of the students that were there, they said they had made friends too. Even though we were probably never going to see them again, it was nice chatting and having fun with these “strangers”. When asked about the track meet, sixth grader, Luis, said, “Fun, but in the end it was kind of boring.” Seventh grader, Oscar, said, “It was really fun and they were really competitive.” Eighth grader, Zuleima, said, “They were really nice, well-organized, and fun.” Mr. Bekker, the coordinator of the event, said,”I was very excited to be invited. It gives our student athletes a chance to compete in and try something new.” |

Right now Michael is being very nice because he is making a birthday present for his father. He is making a bird house. Luiz is wood burning evil monkey from family guy. Jonny created an awesome wood burning Gir. Marisela and April are being generous by making Mr.Bekker a hat rack. The second semester shop class seemed to goof off more than other shop classes, but at the same time they have gotten a lot of work done. To me this class seemed like a larger class than normal, and they are very loud and energetic. Other than that it seemed to be a great class. What I really liked was how they were ready for me to come ask questions about their projects and how they’re going or what their starting now. Most of the class is slacking because it’s the end of the year! |

The keyboarding class is working on a PowerPoint. The first PowerPoint that they were doing was a vacation they would take to any theme park in the United States, and who they would take. They had to add the following: *airplane prices *hotel prices *food costs *park ticket prices *pictures of rides They’ve already finished that PowerPoint, and are off to their next project. The next PowerPoint is about including videos. Erin said “she was going to do her project on birthdays.” Shanna said, “I’m going to be making mine on piranhas.” They are about to finish the power-point they have. They HAVE to include a video. They can do this presentation on anything they want but they can’t forget their video. Another assignment the keyboarding class did was, write a letter to their favorite company. Zuleima wrote a letter to her favorite company which was Frito-lay where they make Fritos corn chips. They will be presenting this article someday next week for their final. I sure hope everyone gets their PowerPoint done on time, and that they get a good grade on it! Zuleima really enjoys being in keyboarding because she likes to work on new things that she has never tried out before. Also she likes to work with computers. |

Last Friday, we had the Geyserville Ed Park House Olympics day here at our school. Some of the activities were an obstacle course, chess, a relay-race, a balloon slingshot…and…there was dessert. At one point in the balloon sling shot game, all the teachers lined up out in the field and the students, high school students and middle school students, were allowed to…fire at will…It was very entertaining. Extremely. Chess started out oddly when Pena had to wait for an opponent from Bosworth. That Bosworth person never came >:O so in the end Pena played against Mihi. And won. There was also a water slide-thingy on the lawn, but it seems the students were more interested in frolicking in the sprinklers. FROLIC. All in all, an exciting day. Hope we do it again next year. |
