Well, I began chapter two with a solid idea in my head, not specifically separating it from chapter one in the way of dramatics. Instead, I felt the need to help the reader get a better idea of who my characters were, as they didn’t get much verbal face time in the first chapter. I also actually felt guilty of killing off Captain Reed, as I set him up as a possible major character in the beginning and didn’t want the reader to be cheated from having such a possibly colorful character taken away from them. I also set up some of the major plot points using this chapter, such as the steps Bruiskia is willing to take to stop the three, also the inclusion of the dragon. As long as I am on the chapter of dialogue, I would like to address the amount of vulgarities I use in my book. What I try to do before writing a piece of dialogue is to act it out in my head, viewing it like a mini-movie upon which I can describe people’s emotions and actions realistically. In the real world, which most of us can attest to, people aren’t always perfect in their speech, which results in my natural dialogue. When I picture a panicky situation, like the one between Kate in Grease at the beginning, I often think of what a regular person would say, after all, everyone isn’t James Bond who is cool in every situation. So, in my characters stressful situations, they cus to relive some of that stress, and it adds a certain… grungy flavor to the dialogue I hope my readers like. All in all, I really researched a lot into modern day pirates like in Somalia and I put my own dramatic flavor into it. Generally, I tried my darnedest to recreate that ocean atmosphere that I felt for this chapter. I had a lot of inspiration from a few movies I have seen that have been on the sea, and a few books, but the ones that stuck out to me were Deep Blue and MEG, they really allowed me to image the scenes, especially the climax. My basic motivation to write the chapter was to deepen the story further than before, a pattern I’m going to continue until I get to the climax of my entire book. So, I hope you’ve enjoyed the book so far, be sure to check in every issue as we release a chapter every month! |
