Saint Patricks Day |
|
Saint Patrick’s day, also called St. Paddy’s day, is an annual feast day which celebrates St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland who is one of Christianity's most widely known figures. But for all his celebrity, his life remains somewhat of a mystery. Many of the stories traditionally associated with St. Patrick are false and just the products of hundreds of years of storytelling. The most widely-seen St Patrick's Day symbols are the colors green, and sometimes orange, and the shamrock. The shamrock is a symbol of Ireland and a registered trademark of the Republic of Ireland. Saint Patrick's Day is celebrated worldwide by those of Irish descent and increasingly by people of other ethnicities as well, notably in Argentina, Australia, New Zealand and North America. Celebrations are themed around all the things which are associated with the Irish culture and the color green. Attending parades, which have a particularly long history in the United States and in Canada is also an important thing. People in different countries have different opinions of how to celebrate this special day. In Argentina, especially in Buenos Aires, people celebrate all night long with singing and dancing. The longest-running Saint Patrick's Day parade in Canada occurs each year in Montreal often on the Sunday closest to March 17. The parade in Montreal has been held every year since 1824. People who have an Irish background or enjoy Irish culture may hold Irish themed parties and serve traditional dishes, such as Colcannon or Irish stew. Traditional Irish drinks include stout, a dark beer, and whiskey. Other parties may be themed around the color green. Guests may be expected to wear green clothes and only green food and drink is served. Last but not least the Saint Patrick’s day in the United States. Today, Saint Patrick's Day is widely celebrated in America by Irish and non-Irish alike. Many people, regardless of ethnic background, wear green-colored clothing and items like in other countries too. Traditionally, those who are caught not wearing green are pinched, usually affectionately. Seattle paints the traffic stripe of their parade routes green and Chicago dyes its river green and so do many other different states. The first St. Patrick's Day celebration in the United States was held in Boston in 1737. The largest St. Patrick's Day parade is in New York City. http://www.kiddyhouse.com/Holidays/StPat/ http://www.funmunch.com/events/patricks/history.shtml http://www.infobarrel.com/Why_do_we_Celebrate_St_Patrick's_Day%3F http://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/australia/st-patrick-day |
