Text Box: Star Testing...Oh My!

Paige Baumgardner

My Music: Metal Mania II!

Lindsay Swaney

Recently, as everyone in 6th-11th grade has most certainly noticed, students here at Geyserville Ed Park have been taking the California Standardized Test. This is because our school is part of the Standardized Testing and Reporting Program (STAR).

Some students do not take the STAR tests seriously because the scores you get on the STAR tests do not affect your grades, and colleges do not look at the scores of STAR tests either. The STAR test results are used only to show how well the school did in comparison with other schools in the state. No one should take the test with the attitude that it does not matter, though, because low test scores in students are bad for the school-wide average. Students are rated according to a scale with five levels. The tests are rated as advanced, proficient, average, below average, or far below average.

All students are supposed to be tested, but there are a few exceptions. The parent of a student has the option of writing a letter to the principal of the school to request that their son or daughter be allowed to not take the STAR tests. Also, students in special education do not have to take the STAR tests, as long as their IEP specifies that they should not be tested. There are alternate ways to take the STAR, such as in Braille or with extra time, but again their IEP must specify these alternate necessities.

For a long time, schools in California all gave their students the same test to take, called the CAP (or California Assessment Program). Some districts, but not all, required supplementary tests, like the CTBS (or California Test of Basic Skills).

In the early 1900’s, schools began taking the CLAS tests. CLAS stands for California Learning Assessment System. However, schools soon stopped using this system because of all of the hullabaloo over some parts of the test. After that, schools started picking their own tests to distribute to the students until the STAR Program began in 1988.

The Standardized Testing and Reporting Program is important to our schools because it shows how well (or how badly) the schools in California are doing. The higher the test scores, the more likely the school will remain open. So, take the star test seriously and always do your best! Happy Trails!

Emerging during the mid 1980s, death metal was built off the speed and complexity of thrash metal. It’s typically characterized by fast tempos, heavily distorted guitars, deep growling vocals, exceptionally fast-paced rhythms and melodies, blast beat drumming, morbid lyrics, and complex song structures with multiple tempo changes. The setup most frequently used in death metal is two electric guitars, a bass guitar, a vocalist and a drum kit almost universally using two bass drums or a double bass drum pedal. Although this is the standard setup, bands have been known to incorporate other instruments such as electronic keyboards. Bands categorized in this genre are Cannibal Corpse, Arsonists Get All the Girls, Black Dahlia Murder, Children Of Bodom, Gojira, In Flames, Job for a Cowboy, Suicide Silence, Whitechapel and my favorite Kataklysm. Death metal is considered an "underground" form of music, and has been met with considerable hostility from mainstream culture, mainly because of the socially unattractive themes, imagery and stage personae surrounding many bands.

Glam metal, also known as hair metal, is a subgenre of heavy metal that arose in the late 1970s and early 1980s, particularly on the Los Angeles Sunset Strip music scene. Glam metal performers became infamous for their debauched lifestyles of late-night parties that were widely covered in the tabloid press. The genre combined a flamboyant look (very long teased hair, the use of make-up, and sported gaudy clothing and accessories) and power-chord based hard rock musical style. Songs were traditional hard rock or heavy metal songs with catchy hooks over hard-hitting drumming. Some songs feature flashy shred guitar solos with pinch harmonics. The overall sound is much more studio-engineered than earlier styles of heavy metal, such as the rough, raw sound of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands. The vocals have a softer melody, sometimes with a "sing-along" chorus. They were usually sung with a clean hard rock tone; in contrast to other heavy metal music that often have a more extreme vocal style. Some of the bands in this genre are Poison, Motley Crue, Twisted Sister, Quiet Riot, Cinderella, White Lion, Wasp, and Dokken.

This tree was like no other tree it was magical. Most people say trees talk in spiritual ways, but this tree actually talked. My name is Max and I discovered this tree in the forest around my house. One night I was bored and decided to wonder off. the forest was full f things I never expected. The trees were shinning that night and the rain was slowly dripping from the sky while I kept walking. I walked for a long time till I saw a different tree. It wasn’t shinning its mysterious character drew me to it. I was out off it by then so I asked the tree why he was different, not knowing weather he would answer. “Why are you different?” I sat next to the tree waiting for a response when I heard a whisper, “I can’t tell you.” I looked around, was I being messed with? “What who are you?” “You asked me a question so I answered.” I was in aw and started a conversation. He told me his name is Ronny and that he was born different. He could talk to people unlike the others. He learned the English language and was curious about people and their lives. I told him about humans and we created a special relationship. He was like my brother. I introduced him to my friends Robert and Monte. We were the four friends that would always be tight. Like a regular day we walked to talk to Ronny. We hear another person “TIMBER!!!” we hear. We run down there to see our friend lying on the floor dead. A lumberjack had killed my best friend. I hysterically start yelling at the lumberjack while having a breakdown. My friend was gone his last words were “Escape from the pain” I walked away with a sad hole in my heart my friends were supportive Robert and Monte were saddened by this till I had a dream. Ronny told me he had found peace and he wanted us to find someone new. He sent me a friend, a really good friend of his; Craig. Craig became a great friend to all of us and we were tight till the end. We discovered that Craig had been friends with Ronny, but they had been separated when he was forced to leave to the U.K. He came back for Ronny but it was too late. We kept close.
