Geyserville’s tennis team traveled to the Konocti Resort for a tennis tournament on Sunday the 26th and played on Monday the 27th. The players they brought to play were Sawyer Wilson, David Hadley Men’s singles, Luke Gevas and Petie Bensin men’s doubles, Alice Reed, Nikki Storteon women’s singles,   Jennifer Reyes and Veronica Lopez, and Kelsie Jones and Hannah Paquette women’s doubles.

The first two rounds of the tournament were scored with pro-sets which is the first person to get to eight and win by two. In the first round, our singles players David and Sawyer both got through an easy game and advanced to the next round. Petie and Luke were matched up against a tough opponent and fell to them and didn’t advance to the next round. Hannah and Kelsie lost in a close match and didn’t advance. Jennifer and Veronica won their round one match but lost in the second round in a very hard match. Alice got matched up against a tough player. She fought hard but kept getting frustrated at the court because the ball would hit a crack and take a weird bounce. Nikki won her first match and advanced to take on Stella from Anderson Valley who won the tournament last year. Nikki Played well but fell to her in two sets.

David, in the second round, played a guy from Anderson Valley. David substantially beat him with a score of 8-0. During the second round for Sawyer, he played the number one player for Kelseyville and the number 2 ranked player in the tournament. The match started off well getting to 5-5. The reason Sawyer could get to 5-5 was because the Kelseyville player was looking past Sawyer and expecting it to be an easy win for him. The Kelseyville player got frustrated and started hitting shots out. But when it got to 5-5 he stepped up his play and beat Sawyer 8-5. David advanced to the Quarter Finals and played someone from Clear Lake. He was tough and attacked the net strongly and David could not find a defense for it. David lost 6-2, 6-3. Our team did well this year. We have a lot of returning players and plan on doing well next year and hopefully bring home the championship.

Softball Dynamics

The Lady Bronchos ended their season 13-9. They made it to the playoffs and play on Wednesday 5:00 pm at Tomales High School. This is the softball teams 3rd year in a row making it to playoffs. Unfortunately, four players are going to the Oregon trip on Tuesday, the day before playoffs, and won’t be able to make it. Stephanie Castillo, Kelsie Jones, and Casey Morgan are doing the team a big favor and filling in the spots for those who are going to Oregon so that we can have a team for the playoffs. Thank you and good luck Lady Bronchos.

The Bronchos had their last game at Laytonville on Thursday and played to end up in a three way tie against Potter Valley and Laytonville for 1st place. They tried their hardest and didn’t give up, ending the game with a loss 6-3. The Bronchos ended up 3rd in league, Potter Valley in 2nd, and Laytonville in 1st. The Lady Bronchos had a good season and they can’t wait to come back next year with a first place banner to place in the gym with all the others.

There were only two graduating seniors on the 08-09 Softball Team; Jocelyn Hale, and Maricruz Rodriguez. They received a rose on the last home game and ran the bases as fast as they could, ending their run with a slide at home plate. Tears and joy came from the both of them, while realizing to themselves “this is it our last home game”. The team will miss you both, thank you for your hard work and effort that was put on and off the field. These two players have come along way from where they started and became extraordinary players. We wish them the best in their future.

Thank you so much; Jamie Hale, Remy Gonzaga and Jose Flores, for everything you guys have done for the team. It was an honor to have such wonderful coaches caring for each individual and making them better on the field and in their hearts. These three coaches gave their time and commitment to come out every day and teach the girls something new. They brought the team closer together and made them into a family. Thank you coaches and hope to see you next year.

Sports awards are coming up sometime around June 3rd, so be there to cheer on those who played softball and tennis.

In the national league, the San Francisco Giants are second in the Western standings just under Los Angeles Dodgers with 19 wins and 19 losses. Since the last article, there has been a lot going on. Pitcher Joe Martinez was beamed in the head and had a fractured skull and a concussion, but he should be back on the mound soon. Pitcher Noah Lowry has had surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome after being misdiagnosed by the ballclub last year. It is likely he will not come back to baseball. Even with those downfalls the Giants are pulling themselves up in the standings and I believe will soon pass up the Dodgers for 1st place.

On Lowry’s case, his agent accused the Giant’s staff of doing inappropriate procedures on the young pitchers, but the Giant’s staff denies the accusations. In his operation, one of his left ribs was removed. I have yet to find out it was a success.

New show and CSN Bay Area, “Life of Brian”, aired this month. Staring the Giant’s close out pitcher, Brian Wilson, the show takes you behind the scenes of a professional baseball player’s life. It is worth a look at.

Manny Ramirez, one of the Dodger’s best players, was suspended for the use of steroids. The found out he was doing steroids because he was taking female hormones to come off the drugs. I just mentioned this because the Dodgers are our rivals and this makes me happy.

We are on bad terms with the Dodgers because they took offense to something Brian Wilson does after every game he closes to salute his father. He crosses his arms and turns his back on the batter that he just struck out to pay tribute to his father and he turns his back to not offend the player, but that’s just what happened, so now the Dodger’s hate the Giants and that’s life.

The Giants are awesome, it is that plain and simple. Stay tuned to watch the Giants kick butt and finally make it to the play offs!
