What is Red Ribbon Week? To some it’s just getting class points for wearing an awesome bracelet, to others, Red Ribbon Week represents something entirely different.

I interviewed the advisor of Red Ribbon Week, Mrs. Brown, and she opened my eyes to the history and symbolism of what Red Ribbon Week really is.

Red Ribbon Week is to commemorate the dedication and life of Enrique “Kike” Camarina who was killed by drug lords while fighting the illegal drug trade in Mexico.  Enrique Camarina was a resident of Los Angeles at the time of his murder and those who recognized his great efforts to stop the illegal drug trade in the country began the tradition of Red Ribbon Week.  Red Ribbon Week began in 1988 and we have been celebrating it here in Geyserville for 21 years.

The celebration of this week in Geyserville represents that we are aware there is a drug problem and we, the students and staff of Geyserville High School, pledge to rise against drugs. Many things can happen in one week:  a person can enter a rehab center, a kid can get addicted to some sort of hardcore drug, and drug lords can execute hundreds of innocent people for fighting for what they know is right. They are fighting for a drug free world in which there are no lives lost due to overdoses, no broken families as a result of drug abuse, no one puking, crying, and yelling because they are going through the pains of withdrawal. The only benefits of the drug

trade are the mounds of blood money the drug lords receive.

Drug lords are such a problem right now; they are killing police officers and even going to rehab centers to execute people.  Police officers are being found dead in the desert, usually with their bodies mangled and decapitated. They lie there dead for their families and you, all to stop a billion dollar drug trafficking ring.

On a good note, those who have helped Mrs. Brown during Red Ribbon Week should give themselves a well deserved pat on the back. She was very impressed with all of the volunteers this year.

“There are 25 kids doing drug presentations at the elementary school, and they even ask me if they can tie the big red ribbons up town”.  Mrs. Brown

Even though there are some who do not recognize Red Ribbon Week as an important event, it sure has impacted our school in a positive way. This is what Red Ribbon Week is all about.
