This month, we’ve recently learned of piece of student writing that sets itself apart from most other regular work from our students. This isn’t a drawing, a piece of art, its not a poem or haiku, not a short story, instead, it is an entirely full novel. Brett Wilson has been working on this book since 2007, only having a few hours a week to school to write, but often explosively adds a few chapters during the summer. I recently sat Brett down to get why he is doing what he is doing and what he plans to do with it. Interviewer: Hello Brett, I’ glad you had the time to sit down! Brett: Oh no problem, I was only doing homework… anyway, I believe you have a few questions for me? Interviewer: Of course! First things first: What exactly inspired you to even write this? After all, add this to all your schooling and living, why would you spend most of your free time on this? Brett: Well, I certainly don’t spend all my free time writing this book, I play videogames, watch TV, and hang with friends whenever I can. But the reason why I originally began writing was to beat my sister, who also was writing, but was writing short stories. Interviewer: A bit of a sibling rivalry? Brett: Not really, I tend to just gravitate to what I’m good at, but beating her was defiantly a bit of my motive. I also began writing because of my love of creating stuff; I love the idea of creating a world, making something so epic and expansive that it just sends chills down your spine. Interviewer: Then how is it that you manage to even get the time to write, or the motivation? Brett: I don’t. It just happens, I never have a set schedule where I spend an hour at night and write, it just happens when I get that feeling, it’s just spontaneous. Interviewer: Well, before we get any farther, what is your book about? Brett: Well, my book is a mix of almost everything I love in life, though it was heavily influenced by fiction works and movies, like Eragon and Reign of Fire. It’s basically a mix of action/adventure, war, romance, mystery, and a psychological thriller. It’s also in an fictional universe, much like Lord of the Rings, but with a more modern time period. Think of battle armored dragons being supported by soldiers with guns and attack helicopters and you’ll get the idea. But the characters and plot line isn’t just explosion and fire. The main character, Jon Griffin, grew up in the slums of rather large, harbor city of Miltibar, where he then became a modern pirate (think Somalia). But through his two year career as a small time pirate, he never actually killed a man, despite having been very skilled in using weapons. In one pirate raid on a seemingly normal yacht, he and his fellow pirates get caught up in political conspiracies between the two super powers Katan and Bruiskia. He eventually is pardoned by Katan and leaves his career as a pirate behind and joins law enforcement. The book follows his exploits as he weaves in and out of conspiracies and realizes all is not as it seems. Interviewer: Well I, personally, can’t wait to read it… Have you had any thought on publishing it? Brett: Oh yes, but I want to make sure its good, so far though my friend assures me it’s worthy of making money. Interviewer: Very good, thank you for your time. |
