Thanksgiving, commonly known as the harvest festival, is coming up. It is a holiday celebrated primarily in Canada and the United States. While religious in origin, it is now primarily identified as a secular holiday. It is unknown in Germany, so this Thanksgiving is my first one. I hope to see all the traditions which this day offers.

Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday of October in Canada and on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States. This month we are taking a break from our favorite comic book character, Deadpool, which seems to have made it into every article, now this one too. But this month we are talking about two different villains. In the first part of the article Bullseye will be taking the spotlight, then The Hood will have his time to shine.

Bullseye is a sociopath, psychotic, mentally deranged ruthless killer.  Bullseye is insane and has no remorse for anyone he has killed. He kills not because he has to, or because he is paid to, but because he enjoys it and has a lot of fun with it. He was crazy from the very beginning; when he was 10 years old he attempted to kill his alcoholic abusive father by burning their home down, he was (unfortunately) unsuccessful and was then placed in a foster home. He didn’t get along with anyone. When he hit high school he played baseball, he was VERY accurate with his pitching. He was so good that he was going to get a scholarship. be called out but the coached yelled at him and said “NO!”, and then the batter mocked him and said he was a “coward” Bullseye then pitched the ball with a smile and hit the man in the head killing him “Bullseye” he said as the man fell to the ground.

That was a mere look into Bullseye’s past, his present is even more sick and twisted. From being a hired to kill from the (old) Kingpin of Crime Wilson Fisk, to killing for fun , and being a super villain. Bullseye’s nemesis is a Blind super hero named Daredevil. Daredevil has pestered Bullseye for years. They each have had their share of victories over each other. Like when Daredevil beat Bullseye so severely that he was hospitalized, this was the stepping stone to Bullseye getting Adamantium bonded to his skeleton. Bullseye has since joined the Dark Avengers, a group of super villains who are posing as super heroes, lead by Norman Osborn. On the team Bullseye poses as Hawkeye. Norman sent Bullseye to kill Deadpool one time. Bullseye shoot Deadpool through the head with a bow, then Deadpool meat hooked Bullseye and then he was going to saw him in half with a chainsaw but Bullseye offered to pay him a huge amount of money, the money he’s earned from killing people clamming he doesn’t want the money he just likes to kill. After that Deadpool and Bullseye reminisced about their battle, laughing together going their separate ways peacefully.

But in the most recent battle, Bullseye laced a business building with hundreds of people in it with explosives, giving Daredevil the option to either fight him or save the building. Daredevil chose to fight Bullseye instead, Bullseye then detonated the bombs destroying the building and everyone in it and Bullseye escaped leaving Daredevil with his mistake. Bullseye is obviously mentally unstable and is a scary character, but The Hood would have to take the medal for the scariest villain, mainly because his powers come from a demon that he is possessed by, but that story for next time.

United States, and this celebration became an important part of the American myth by the 1800s.

The traditional Thanksgiving menu often features turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie. Americans may eat these foods on modern day Thanksgiving, but the first feast did not consist of these items. On the first feast, turkey was any type of fowl that the pilgrims hunted. Pumpkin pie wasn't on the menu because there were no ovens for baking, but they did have boiled pumpkin. Cranberries weren't introduced at this time. Due to the diminishing supply of flour there was no bread of any kind. The foods included in the first feast included duck, geese, venison, fish, lobster, clams, swan, berries, dried fruit, pumpkin, squash, and many more vegetables.

During Thanksgiving Day, families and friends usually gather for a large meal or dinner. Consequently the Thanksgiving holiday weekend is one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Thanksgiving is a four-day or five-day weekend vacation for some schools and colleges. Most business and government workers (78% in 2007) are given Thanksgiving and the day after as paid holidays. The night before Thanksgiving is one of the busiest nights of the year for bars and clubs, as many college students and others return to their hometowns to reunite with friends and family.

The Christmas shopping season begins on the Thanksgiving weekend and is known as “Black Friday”.

Don’t let the turkey burn in the oven.

My name is Sina Kilian and I am an exchange student from Germany attending Geyserville High school for the 2009-2010 school year. The students, teachers and the way of learning are very different when you compare them to Germany. I attended the Hebel Gymnasium in Schwetzingen, which is a small suburb of Mannheim.

There are over 2000 students walking through the big hallways of this school every day. We do not have the chance to choose the subjects we want to take in school because all the students have the same level of education. I think it is a big issue in my school that we don’t have the chance to do different kind of sports after school because now I know that you can make a lot of friends only in participating in school activities. But we have a lot of interesting subjects in school. We also learn a lot of different languages like Spanish, English, German, Chinese and Latin. You have to learn at least two foreign languages. Another important difference is that you have all your classes with the same students every day. Usually there are 25-30 students in one classroom. I think it’s much better to have a lot of different people around you like it is here in Geyserville High School. In my school one class lasts 45 minutes and we have two big breaks which last 20 minutes. School starts at 7.35 and ends usually at 12.55.  In my opinion most teachers in Germany are very strict but if you try to give your best you can get a very good education. If you want to graduate in a gymnasium you have to attend school for 13 years.

If you want to participate in sports in Germany, you usually play in a club outside the school. I played soccer for five years on a girl’s team and now on the Geyserville soccer team. It’s a lot of fun even though I’m the only girl. In Germany, outside of  school you can join any club you can imagine but we don’t have baseball or softball. Because of that reason I’m very excited to join the Geyserville High softball team.

I really like the people in America. In my opinion, people are very open-minded and always very friendly. I also really like the American way of life and the attitude.

In Germany I live in Bruehl. It has a population of 17.000. We have different restaurants and small stores where you can buy any kind of clothes or food. If you want to hang out with your friends you can go to different youth centers. There are also a lot of festivals where you can meet your friends. It’s very easy to get to the places you want to without having a car because we have very good bus and train connections. The weather in Germany is not like the weather in California. We have snow during Christmas, and sometimes lot of rain. In the summer it’s sometimes very hot-but not as hot as here.

You can’t compare different countries to each other because there are always advantages and disadvantages.

All in all I would say that I like it in both countries. There are always things I like and things I don’t like.

But I am very happy that I made this big step to visit another country all by myself because nobody could ever know how much I have learned since coming here.
