One day, while I was teaching my students about the magnificent art of drawing shoes, a friendly young lady (who was also a student of mine), Linda, came to me with a pressing request. “Ms. Loomis, would you like to write an article for the school paper?” she asked. “Sure!” I said, “But what is this article to be about?” “Anything you want,” she replied. So, this is the task I was given….but what to write about? After ruling out a documentary on farm lamas, and a profile on the nature of soil densities in Sweden, I decided to write about the thing in my life that gives me the most purpose in my career; my students! So here is a little bit about the people around me (and you) at Geyserville Ed Park. For My search, I was destined to find out interesting facts about the students around me, such as weird or unusual happenings, favorite bands, and what they do on their free time. I had interviewed 9 students on my quest, and each had their own unique and interesting story. The first victim, uh, student that I had the opportunity to interview was Madalyn Kolkman, who is a freshman. She was not really sure how old she was, and had to think about it for a while, but it turns out she is 14. Madalyn is allergic to mangoes, which is really a bummer, because mangoes are the best thing ever! She also is an avid drawer, and she likes MC Escher. The second student I interviewed was Johnny Rodriguez. He, like Madalyn, is also a freshman. He is a very interesting character. I found out that he enjoys reading science books (not science fiction, but from his science class). Johnny claims that he has slight memory loss. Sometimes he cooks noodles, and forgets to put in the water. This one time, he blew a really big bubble when he was chewing gum, and it covered his entire face. Forgetting to remove the gum, he could not see, and ran into a door. And to make him even more interesting, he can stick his finger in his eye socket. A bit of a creepy talent, but nonetheless, wow! The third and forth people I interviewed were kind of a set; Juanita Agular and Andy Gallardo. They are both 12, in 7th grade, and enjoy to listening to rock music like Slipknot, Hollywood Undone, Flyleaf, etc. They had a funny pickle story: Once, for whatever reason, Juanita was violently shaking a pickle at Andy. The pickle, fresh out of the jar, was still covered in pickle juice, which squirted in Andy’s eye. If you have ever met Juanita, this would not seem out of character for her to do something silly like attacking her friend with a pickle. Advice: stop eating so much sugar, Juanita! Makes you crazy! J The next student, Jake Lindelof, is a 7th grader with hidden talents. He loves classic rock music, (such as the Beatles, Queen, The Who, Yes, and AC/DC) which has inspired him to start playing guitar. He’s been doing this for about six months now. Did you know that he has also been playing piano for five years? To top off his talents, he also draws on his own. Way to go, Jake! During my 7th period, I had a chance to interview some seniors. The first, Sawyer Wilson, did not have too much to say, but he had some interesting facts about himself. Apparently, he has duel citizenship in the U.S. and Canada. He likes to longboard on his free time, and eventually he would like to open up his own music venue. Pretty neat, huh? Then, I had the opportunity to get to know Diego Gonzalez a bit more. Diego has an obsession with soccer, but he claims it is a healthy obsession. His life mainly consists of soccer and music, and when he is not doing an activity that involves one or the other, he is sleeping. He’s really into music; he has like 100 albums! He goes to shows all the time, and he really likes hardcore punk and metal core. He just started learning to play guitar, and he practices his hardcore scream a lot, so maybe someday he will play in a band as a vocalist or guitarist. If you have him in your class, |

you have probably heard him practicing that scream! I must say that the most adventurous person I had a chance to interview was Petie Besin. He has traveled to every state except Hawaii and Florida. He has been in a car traveling 135 MPH, and he has almost been eaten by a grizzly bear! He’s a dirt biker, and in his short life so far he has fractured 5 ribs, his collar bone, his nose seven times, and has shattered his pinky! OMG! Petie has way too many adventures to write about in this brief article, but I’m sure he’ll tell you a tale if you ask him. The last interview of the day was with another senior, Tori Cordova, who is Native American. She likes big groups of happy people, like at a sports game or concert, where she can be rowdy and loud. She also likes to make things, like crafts and paintings. She is really into music, but as one of her friends claims, “She has no music prejudice,” meaning that she likes just about everything. Tori really likes to “be in motion” whether that is riding a bike, going on a road trip, or walking. She told me about this really fun road trip she had once with her dad where they were just planning to drive to Santa Rosa, but they just kept going. After stopping in a bunch of different places, they ended up all the way in Santa Cruz instead! Sounds like fun! Well, I really enjoyed getting to know the people around me a little better! Being a teacher is such an awesome job because you get to know so many interesting people. Try and get to know the people around you in your life, too. You might hear something inspiring or totally hilarious. I know I did! |

Don’t Miss The Senior Update Below! |

Seniors are doing well and our final year is going by quickly. Most seniors agree and they cannot wait to get out and move on to college. Some of our seniors are getting prepared for next year in Mrs. Equitz’s AVID class. Recently she has been preparing them to attend the JC and/or obtain a job. In class they practiced constructing a class schedule that met all the general education requirements before they can transfer to a four year university. Currently Mrs. Equitz is preparing students for getting a job. She is having her AVID student’s practice filling out applications and writing a cover letter for that application. Mrs. Equitz is preparing students with the tools to move on to the next level of education and hopefully they will succeed. The seniors get to celebrate their final year by going on a senior trip that usually lasts 3 days. At the beginning of the year, our seniors wanted to see if we could afford to go to Disneyland. Grad Night at Disneyland is a night of rides and fun. Our class officers started looking into going but realized that our senior funds could not cover the trip. I talked to Mr. Fernandez, the senior class advisor, and he said that there are several options for a trip and he is going to pitch the |

ideas at the next senior class meeting. In the senior lounge the couches are starting to break down. Apparently students are being rough on the couches because the foot rest on one of the reclining spots is broken. These couches are not going to last for future seniors to enjoy the lounge in comfort. They are soon going to be all broken and ripped. The only solution is to purchase new furniture every other year. See you next month! |
